This article is totally misleading. The amouts that you quote include the figures for PLANNING PERMISSION and PLANNING enforcement.
    – Do they also include other enforcements such as envirnomental etc ??

Given that planning Depts are magnitudes larger than Building Control and the fact that planning permission enforcement has little or nothing to do with building regulations it would be crazy to suggest that the 70 odd building control officers for the country are costing €219 million

I would be surprised if it was 2.19 million much less 219. (if you strip out the cost fire officers assessing Fire Certs in the office)

I note that the total income for BC Depts for CN is only about €300,000 per annum curently (10,000 buildings x €30)

Many thanks for spotting previous draft errors. Is there any accurate source which has a breakdown of these overall figures to extract the cost of building control from planning services etc? As you say the staff involved in building control would seem to be quite low (70 nationally) so these figures, even corrected downwards, would still seem to be very high for the personnel allocated.

The figures quoted above are incorrect. According to the website, Carlow County Council spends €6.37 per person or 0.8% of it’s €44m budget on Building Control.

    0.8% of €44m is €352,000.
